The best time to see a colorful display of salwar kameez’s, saree’s, bridal wear and lengha choli’s is during Indian weddings.
The most preferred Indian attire worn in Indian weddings is the Lengha choli also known as Ghagra choli, chaniya choli and sharara.
A lengha is the skirt and is teamed with a long or short (midriff-bearing), stitched and fitted blouse (the choli). The lengha is secured at the waist and usually leaves the back and midriff bare. Lengha choli’s are also worn with a dubetta, a 2 1/2 meters of light transparent material usually georgette. The dubetta is worn as a scarf or veil.
The lengha is the equivalent of the wedding or ball gowns that we see at Hollywood award’s shows. Most if not all, Indian outfits come in a set of 3pcs (blouse / skirt / shawl). There are mainly 4 types of skirt cuts that are available, A-cut, straight cut, umbrella cut and mermaid or fish cut.
In modern times the lehenga choli is an exotic Indian clothing with embroidery using stones, kundan, zari, crystals, kori, resham, mirrors, sequins and some times real gold threads. Some designers use intricate brocade, tanchoi and heavy satins designed with real gold and silver embroidery, and studded with precious stones, which also can be done on the dubetta. Dubetta’s are increasingly becoming smaller nowadays, some even acting as necklace pieces.
